Schloss Bellevue is situated on the northern edge of the park, on the banks of the Spree river, near the Berlin Victory Column. The palace has served many purposes over the years, and has been a property of the Free State of Prussia since 1928. It was severely damaged by strategic bombing and the 1945 Battle of Berlin, after which it was refurbished substantially in the 1950's. The palace was refurbished again in 1986, and after German reunification President Richard von Weizsacker moved his primary residence to it in 1994. However, since the latest reconstruction in 2006, there are no living quarters and the Federal President lives in a government-owned villa in Dahlem, southwestern Berlin. |
