This building is the Institution Nationale des Invalides. At its far end, the Pont Alexandre III (bridge which is pictured later) links this urbanistic axis with the Petit Palais and the Grand Palais. Hardouin-Mansart's chapel dome is seen in the middle of the long facade. The dome was the model for San Francisco's new City Hall. The building contains museums and monuments all relating to the military history of France, as well as a hospital and retirement home for war verterans. It is also the burial site for some of France's war heroes, notably Napoleon Bonaparte. |
