Shakespeare and Company

This well known independent bookstore was originally established in 1919 by Sylvia Beach. In the 1920's the store was a gathering place for writers such as Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway, William S. Burroughs, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, and James Joyce. Beach published Joyce's book Ulysses in 1922, which was banned in the United States and in the United Kingdom.
