This picture was taken from far away to give an idea of how high Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest) sits on the peak of a mountain ridge on Obersalzburg mountain. It is that tiny construction you can barely see right on top, although it is not so small in actual fact, and it is 6,000 feet high. Workers had to blast a road out of solid rock, build tunnels, and a materials cablecar just to complete construction. It was not bombed and the original building still stands. To reach it requires walking through the tunnel and then taking the famous/infamous brass elevator. Hitler actually went there only a few times as he had vertigo. His real love was the Berghof, also on the same mountain. Every trace of the Berghof has been bombed or otherwise blown up. This mountain served as the cradle of the party. The Berghof was Hitler's home and headquarters--the second seat of 3rd Reich power. Hitler's thugs, among them Rudolf Hess, Hermann Goring, Martin Borman and Albert Speer all built here. SS barracs were also built, and in '45, elaborate underground bunkers.
