Winged Victory of Samothrace

The Winged Victory of Samothrace is a 2nd century BC marble sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike. It has been in the Louvre since 1884 and I go see it every time I'm there. The picture above is a pastel I just completed from a photograph. I thought it an appropriate theme for all the winged creatures in this area.

Victorious Osprey

I'm sure this is the same osprey who fished in this area last year.
You can see the fish in his talons.
He caught a stealhead which put up quite a fight. The fish almost took the bird down.
...still struggling.
Victory!!

Heron

Harbinger of Fall

This little leaf came floating down to land on the deck. This is a pastel drawing of it, but the paper does not photograph well. I love the beauty and delicacy of Fall leaves; and then I love to run and jump on them, crushing them beneath my feet.
Same leaf played with in photoshop to give it some pizzaz.
...and changed to a duck.

Forest Sentry

This is an oil of a fire hydrant that I thought was beautiful. It looks like ET dressed as a fire hydrant for Holloween.
I liked it so much I had to play with it in photoshop. This is a "posterized" version. Below is ET leaving for HOME.
...in the moonlight "Everything is Illuminated."
This should have appeared after the oil study below. It is the painting posterized.

Hen

Oil study of chicken who runs the local grocery store. What came first, the chicken or the egg?  Answer: The rooster.

Notre Dame Cathedral

Ink sketch from in front of the Cathedral. The window was so high above my head that I couldn't see much detail.
Detail of the window.

Saint Denise

Saint Denis was the first bishop of Paris. In the year 257, he was decapitated in Montmartre with his companions after they were discovered by a Roman governor.  He is the one with his head in his hands.
One of my favorite gargoyles.

Cafe Life

Sketch in a cafe. I love the waiters with their black vests, bow ties, and white aprons. They dress like this in most of the cafes of Paris.
Quick sketch of people in a cafe.
This cafe hosted most of the French intellectuals during the post war years.

Alexander Nevsky Russian Orthodox Cathedral

Picasso married his first wife, the Russian ballerina Olga Khokhlova, here on July 12, 1918. The guests included Diaghilev, Apollinair, Cocteau, Gertrude Stein, and Matisse.

Appollinaire by Picasso

Appolinaire, inventor of surrealism, along with Picasso laid the foundations of modernism in twentieth-century art and literature. Above is Picasso's monument to Apollinaire in Saint-Germain-des-Pres.

Inside Musee d'Orsay

This picture and the one following was taken from inside the Musee d'Orsay looking through the works of the giant clock. Sacre Coeur in the background.

The following pictures are from the Louvre.  I will provide labels when I get home. Too time consuming now.
