Neue Wache

This sculpture is an enlarged replica of a Kathe Kollwitz sculpture entitled "Woman with Her Dead Son."  The building housing the sculpture is the Neue Wache which served as a royal guard house until the end of World War I and the fall of the German monarchy in 1918. After German reunification, the Neue Wache was rededicated in 1993 as the "Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Victims of War and Tyranny."  This sculpture is directly under the oculus, and its exposure to the elements symbolizes the suffering of civilians during World War II.
Kollwitz is one of the most important artists of the 20th Century. Tomorrow we will go to the  museum which houses much of her work.
