Tiergarten

The Tiergarten is the largest urban park in Berlin. It was designed as a hunting ground in the 1830's for the Electors of Brandenburg, thus the name "Tier" which means animal. In 1919 Karl Liebknecht was shot by Freikorps soldiers within the park. The corpse of Rosa Luxemburg, murdered the same day, was found nearby. This locality now houses several parlimentary and governmental institutions, including the Reichstag building and the new German Chancellery.
