Sketch of Titian's "Assumption of Mary"

The Frari is one of the greatest churches in the city. It is dedicated to the "Assumption" of Mary" and is located in the San Polo district. Titian -- the most important painter of the 16th Century Venetian school of painting-- is interred here. His painting "Assumption of the Virgin" is located on the high altar in the Basilica, which is the largest altarpiece in the city.  This panel broke tradition because of its heroic scale and trademark color, its twisted Virgin and the dramatic gestures of the apostles. Photographs were not allowed, so I did a sketch and wash of Mary. Of course, it is impossible to capture any of the glory of this masterpiece, but just sitting there connecting with it was very moving. I used a sketch and wash pencil.
