Dome of St. Mark's Basilica

One of the many domes of the Basilica which dates from the 11th Century. It  contains the remains of St. Mark the Evangelist, writer of one of the four gospels.  Monteverdi performed his works here and he is buried nearby in the church of the Frari. The architecture is Byzantine. For its opulent design, gilded Byzantine mosaics, and its status as a symbol of Venetian wealth and power, from the 11th Century on the building has been known by the nickname Chiesa d'Oro (Church of Gold).
