Mary on top of the column of St. Mary, Marienplatz

Mary is at the top of a large column at the center of the square known as Marienplatz. It was erected in 1638 to celebrate the end of the Swedish invasion. The gilded statue of the Virgin Mary was sculpted earlier, in 1590 by Hubert Gerhard. At each corner of the column's pedestal is a statue of a putti, creted by Ferdinand Murmann. The puttis symbolize the city's overcoming of war and pestilence.
